What is your favourite Real Madrid squad? This is arguably the greatest team that ever played for Real Madrid…
Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas
At the age of 17, he made his Real Madrid debut and won the European Cup at the age of 19. He has won five LaLiga titles, three Champions Leagues, played over 500 games for Real Madrid, and is a true club legend.
Iker Casillas was a truly exceptional goalkeeper. Just six feet tall, but a colossus between the posts, a master shot-stopper, and a brilliant captain.
For 16 years, the Los Blancos were fortunate to have him.
Right-back: Michel Salgado
Another stalwart of Real Madrid for a decade and a true legend.
Salgado redefined what it meant to be a right back in modern football, transforming himself into a quasi-attacker down the right flank and becoming a key member of the legendary Galacticos.
“The first Spanish I ever knew was Michel saying ‘cover me!’” said Steve McManaman.
Centre-back: Sergio Ramos
Whether you like him or not, Sergio Ramos has been a force of nature at Real Madrid and has established himself as a true club legend.
Centre-back: Fernando Hierro
As Real Madrid captain, he won the European Cup three times while scoring a ridiculous 127 goals from defence.
A real legend in the sport.
Left-back: Roberto Carlos
Is there someone else? With five LaLiga titles, three Champions Leagues, and one in a thousand free kicks, he truly redefined what it meant to be a left-back in the 1990s.
The midfield legend was part of Real Madrid’s all-conquering Ye-Ye squad, which consisted entirely of Spanish players, and was also a totemic figure in their 1966 European Cup-winning side.
Midfield: Amancio Amaro
A true Blancos legend, with over 400 appearances for the club, nine Liga titles, and a central role in the club’s European Cup triumph in 1966.
Midfield: Paco Gento
The guy with, arguably, the best CV in football history.
Fracisco Gento was a key member of Real Madrid’s first great team in the 1950s, winning a record-breaking six European Cups and making over 500 appearances for his beloved Los Blancos.
Gento was a one-of-a-kind character known as The Gale of the Cantabrian Sea because of the way he tormented defenders.
Forward: Alfredo di Stefano
Real Madrid’s greatest player of all time, and a contender for the best of all time.
Alfredo di Stefano was the “most full footballer of all time,” according to both Eusebio and Sir Alex Ferguson, and helped Los Blancos become the club they are today.
He scored in five consecutive European Cup finals, including a hat-trick in 1960 as Real Madrid defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in one of the greatest performances in football history.
He scored 216 league goals for Real Madrid over a ten-year span, a club record that stood for over 40 years.
Forward: Cristiano Ronaldo
At the time, it was a world record transfer that, in retrospect, seemed like a steal.
Real Madrid paid Manchester United €80 million for Cristiano Ronaldo, which could be considered one of the best bargains of the century.
Ronaldo became a totemic figure at Santiago Bernabéu for nine years, shattering the club’s goalscoring record and cementing his place in the top three players of all time.
His rivalry with Barcelona forward Lionel Messi propelled both to fresh, unprecedented heights, with the Portuguese sensation scoring 311 LaLiga goals in just 292 games during his tenure at the club.
Forward: Ferenc Puskas
The Galloping Major was one of the greatest footballers of the twentieth century, with a left foot that was almost unrivalled.
His truly remarkable achievements came when playing for the Hungarian national team in the 1950s, which was one of the greatest teams in the game’s history.
Ferenc Puskas’ incredible achievements weren’t limited to the international stage; he also helped build the foundations for Real Madrid to become the behemoth they are today.
His forward partnership with Alfredo di Stefano won three European Cups and five LaLiga championships, and L’Equipe named him the best player of the twentieth century in 2000.
